Burst Water pipe: what to do with bill?

Got my services bill recently and found I'm owing R18 000 for water!! Upon investigation plumber said a pipe from the meter to the house is leaking. Had to pay them R5700 to do bypass. Found out today that homeowners insurance do not cover this! Secondly got warning from Tshwane to pay R772 (sic) or they'll take legal action. Paid it and a week later they cut my power. Surely it's not legal to cut power for outstanding water? I just feel this is not right. Tshwane did not deliver bills on time for me to pick up the problem. The broken pipe is through no fault of mine. Furthermore the fact that standard bank does not insure pipes, which is an integral part of the structure of a house, is beyond me. Basically, has anyone ever had this happen to them and is there anything I can do? Thx! 47 mths ago

I know that if the pipe bust in your yard, its your problem, if is on the payment, its theirs. Good luck, i don't think there is an easy way to fix it. Maybe a good idea to make an appointment with someone at the Municipality and see what they can do. What i have learned with government organizations, don't go in guns blazing, you might end up worse for it. Be as nice as possible, plead if you must, this normally works.

If the pipe is on your property then sorry. I know it is terrible but you are going to have to fork out the money and the insurance will just tell you you should have read their fine print. The municipality will only pay for it if the burst pipe was on the outside of your property.

All you can do, is to go to the offices and beg them to pay it off. I feel so very sorry for you.

Belle is right. You are liable. Take the time to go to the municipal finance office and sit in the queue to talk to one of their officers to make an arrangement. I think they will allow you to pay it over two years.

OMG I feel for you. Couple yrs ago, they also sent us a R3k bill for water. We lodged a complaint and then when they came out, it was their error in reading the damn meter... but we were also told initially burst water pipe...

A cleverer plumber was required....

We had the same problem but we caught it in time. Surely you could see that there was excessive leakage in the garden. We found a spot that was continually damp and water-logged. What we do now is take a reading once a week and check to see if there is any major change in the reading.

speak to your city councillor/ward councillor.

The plumber's a/c for R5700 seems high! How much work did they actually do, and did they use gold plated pipes? Normal ploycop-type piping and fittings are not that expensive, unless you are laying a 100 metres of it.

Source: I've done quite a bit of plumbing myself lately.
