Resolved Question

Can someone refuse cash money for payment. Some places only accept credit cards. I thought cash is legal tender ???

One place is a computer component supplier, the othe sells large plastic water containers. Both situated in Pretoria - South Africa. I suspect they do it because they do not want to keep cash on the premises, due to the crime situation. My question remains, can they refuse cash payment ? Is that legal ?

legally they are not allowed to, but one will waste more time to discuss the matter with them than it will take to simply find another supplier. They are being silly and believe they can do without your business!!

I've never heard of this Johan. That is ridiculous. Where did that happen? What was their reason? Perhaps GODfm's new world order warnings are coming true sooner than we thought.

It is a legal tender. They cannot refuse. Belief it or not, I've stepped into an Post Office yesterday, which wanted to draw money first for payment. I've told them straight, it's cheaper for me when swiping my card. But they can't refuse and demand payment.

Perhaps thier staff have long fingers, but they should accept cash - if I shopped there, I'd be screwed because I dont have a credit card

Reminds me of when Hugh Hefner from Play boy (saw the documentary on his life) paid his fine in court with plastic bags full of small bills :-) Hahaha especially funny as he acted as the judge in this film about his life. Seeing it from the other end? No. They cant really refuse cash but there might be reasons such as :- Are you paying them with bags and bags of small coins? Or buying a house or car with cash might smack of money laundering. Need more details i.e. where what how much and time of day of the payment to give you a better answer. Contact me via spaces or I will monitor your q and send you an email. regards (not fake money or Zim dollars is it?? ) ;->

Their reason is probably that they are scared of being robbed.

I dont think that by law, they can refuse. There are still people who dont have credit cards.

Robbers don't know they don't keep cash on the premises unless they have made the effort to post a large sign outside. I've heard of people taking only cash and no credit cards but not the other way around, but i don't live in the big city.

Believe it, it is true. Before I switched to internet payments I wanted to pay my subscription of DSTV at a specific Multi-Choice agent and they also refused cash. Only accept bank cards, debit or credit. Even on the monthly statement they state that cash will no longer be accepted at the agents, only at their Randburg offices. Well I never!!

I heard a rumour that Unisa will not be accepting cash from students next year during registration. Don't know how true it is.

Some schools also don't accept cash. You need to deposit directly into their account. Banks charge cash deposit fees. I had money paid into my account buy a vehicle buyer, and the fees I had to pay were crazy.

It is becoming commonplace not to accept cash.

Hey, they are probably clearly marked os it's really your choice to shop there or not. My guess is that it is for safety reasons. My fiancee works with a bit of cash and I am constantly on her to switch everything to EFT or Cards.
