Resolved Question

Can you paint enamel over acrylic?

Moving's over, now the renovation has to start. The fresh-faced country girl named Denielle assured me I don't need to paint a primer on the acrylic paint in the bathroom and kitchen before painting it with gloss enamel but I really don't want to go thru the trauma of picking paint colours again in 3 months when the stuff starts peeling off the wall. 67 mths ago

The fresh-faced country girl is absolutely correct. You do not need a primer to paint enamel over acrylic . A good quality non drip enamel will go over with no problems. For best adhesion , sand the walls lightly first . I have been doing and teaching paint effects in homes for years and have never needed a primer to paint enamel over acrylic.

I believe you can. You need to first wash the wall with sugar soap, then paint a layer of primer.

Enamel on acrylic, yes but never acrylic on enamel but rather take the time to lightly sand the wall and putting on a primer. Rather do it well than doing it over. Hm ... see kitchen ... kitchen walls can become greasy ... definately use a primer there after sanding. And bathroom walls with acrylic paint might be slightly mouldy ... sand and prime!

I would sand and prime if I were you. Just to be safe. Also, I think you will get a better finish. Unless you are like a friend of mine that repaints her house like every six months because she gets bored. If you have decided on a colour that you know you wont get bored with, make the effort and sand and prime!
