Resolved Question

Does insurance pay out when somebody commits suicide?

I refer to Sam's question http://answerit.24.com/Question/Question.aspx?QuestionID=52535 where Andries Krogman committed suicide because HE was depressed, leaving his wife to handle the rest of the recession without a cent from him... I've heard that insurance companies don't pay out if a person commits suicide. 54 mths ago

According to my life insurance they do pay out if someone commits suicide but only if the policy is older than 2 years.

Insurance dont pay. Sadly with depression, the person who is suffering it does not feel any self worth and thinks people will be better off without them. They do not think of the future or suffering of others, they are all consumed with depression...and all they want to do it END the agony of it. Depression is not just a temporary mood, it is a clinical disease of the mind and body. A broken leg can not walk and a depressed mind does not think rationally.

Nope it is always a clause within the policy that it will not pay out should the insured person commit suicide.

Depends on your life policy. Some actually do. BUT, all of them that will only pay out a minimum of 12 months from death.

That is what making it even worse. He did it cause of financial trouble. Now his policies wont pay out, the family loose his monthly income and mom must try and make her way through everything on her own. And there's kids aswell. Very, very selfish come to think of it!

I don't think that they do but I think they should have rights in the Constitutional Court. It is not the fault of the wife and children if the husband commits suicide. Very sad. One really cannot understand the terrible suffering that suicidal people go through. Unless you have been there yourself or with someone close to you, you really can't judge them. They have no control over what they do. He also had a terrible tragedy with his ex-wife--which I posted in a previous Q about him. No-one knows about another person's load they have to carry in their life.

My info corresponds with Kat's - if the policy is older than 2 yrs they will pay out.

Depends on whats written in the small print

Read the policy. Often pay out if the policy is more than a certain age.

no,they do not pay out.it is contra bones mores(against the good morals of society)to commit suicide.

It all depends on the policy, some do and some dont. It is stipulated on the policy. So I guess in his case it all depends on which one he went for. Though I think most of them will not pay out. And someone said only if the policy is older then 2 yrs - yes that's right.

Not as far as I know. I think it's unfair. In my opinion so long as you pay, they should cover suicide.

They do pay but only if you have had the policy for 2 or more years. That is to stop people who want to commit suicide from quickly taking out huge policies.
