Resolved Question

How do I find out who owns an abandoned house?

Hubbie and I have been eyeing out a house that has been empty for approx. 8 months. We would like to make the owner an offer, but don't know how to trace the owner. I have phoned the deeds office and they have given me the regsitered owners name but cannot give me a contact number. We have a feeling that the owner has passed away or emigrated. Would appreciate any suggestions. 68 mths ago

Who can I get to find the owner of a property? If you can't find the owner, you can instruct a private investigator to find the owner. They normally charge R250 to find a person in South Africa .... not sure how good this is but i found this on website below

hmmm... I was going to suggest the deeds office, but you already have the name of the registered owner. I assume you have tried the yellowpages etc. Perhaps try to ascertain when the deeds were last transferred, and who was the transferring agent - you may be able to track either the lawyer or estate agent involved, who may be willing to contact the owner on your behalf. If the owner is really that untraceable, just squat ;P

I would ask the real estate agents that are active in that area. And I'd find this out by driving around the area on a Sunday and taking note of all the show day signboards.

go to your local municipality or you can ask an estate agent to draw check for you they get info from the municipality or they can do a deed search for you as well. Also ask the neighbours if they know something.

If it's in the City of Jo'burg, there's a round-about way to find that info out. Go to http://www.joburg.org.za and use the free mapping software to get the ERF number of the property. Then go to the municipal valuations roll, type in the ERF number and you will find the owner's name.
