How many 'units' of blood does a person have in your body?

Heard of this woman who said she got 22 units when she gave birth, can it be true? 63 mths ago

Best Answer

A unit of blood contains 450ml of blood , a human body approx 5- 6 litres . She would have received 9 litres of blood !!!It does sound a bit over the top but it is possible ( not probable) if she was being given blood before the bleeding was controlled.

Men usually around 8 pints (578ml in a pint) and Women usually around 7 pints. However if you are pregnant your blood volume increases by about 25-30%. I don't what volume a unit is, but if there 2 units to a pint, then 22 units would seem possible.

Yes is it. The amount of blood in the human body depends on the size. body mass is more important then height. An everage man of 70kgs will have approx 5.2 lts of blood. A woman of 50 kgs (petite size) will have 3.3 lts of blood. The average woman will have just over 4 lts. Children obviously have less blood. Tiny premature babies have as little as half a wine glassful of blood. As a general rule blood constitutes about 7-8% of body weight. Some people can have as many as 6 lts of blood. In one day blood can travel the equivalent of 12000 miles and blood vessels laid end to end would reach around 62000 miles. Severe lack of blood can result in the heart not having enough blood to pump around and it can then go into shock which may result in a heart attack.

Your husband is right. She bled out most of the blood they had given her. They gave her blood before they had stopped the source of bleeding. The total amount given was then 22 units. Het jou man lekker op Welkom geslaap? (ek bedoel die mat by die voordeur)
