Resolved Question

I'm four years behind on my tax returns what penalties should I be expecting to pay?

I know I know bad me - although I was out of the country for a year of that time. Should I start budgeting????

I know its bad but I have had zero contact from them and I went to them to rectify the problem. I have been paying my tax religiously all through my working career but I am just really shyte with paperwork

guys guys - why so harsh??? I have been paying - through the nose in fact. I know I will have late submission penalties but I am confident I won't have to pay in anything - just the penalties

R300 per return per year outstanding, ie on the one which has been outstanding for four years expect to pay R1200, outstanding 3 years, R900, etc

There's no excuse. They're online and you could write letters... I don't know how their penalties work, but I know you're going to pay!

BirdieNumNum, I prefer to take the positive approach. Visit your local SARS office and eat humble pie and apologise profusely (weep a little if you can!!), tell them what a bad person you have been and beg their forgiveness. You never know, you might find a friendly SARS official -- I think they also will be happy to have some more money coming into their coffers. Maybe they will be lenient with you. Good luck.

If you have paid the taxes but just did not fill in the returns, it should not be that bad. But if you haven't paid the taxes it might take some sweet talk from your side

40 million S.A citizens...only 4 million taxpayers...now ask yourself - do you feel lucky, punk, well...do ya?

Go and see them immediately. They are much friendlier and more lenient than in the old days. Make arrangements to pay off your debt. Do not wait one day longer. Good luck.

You are looking at a fine of R300 per outstanding tax return

Might as well give your work SARS banking details to pay your salary directly into!!! On a serious note, the penalties and interest are a percentage of the amount that was supposed to be paid, per day, from the day it was supposed to be paid up till the day you pay it. The rip you clean of every cent! I paid the UIF and PAYE a few days late and only found out about 12-15 months after and had to pay them R10 000.00!!! Don't mess with those people cause they are swines I tell you....
