Who cares? If you want to eat ouma rusks by dipping into tea / coffee in public then why shouldn't you? Will others look at you and think "Oh my, I can't eat this sandwich anymore, since she dipped her rusks into her tea, and that is just sooooo tacky"? Fok hulle man - the only reason why things are seen as no-no's is because everyone gives in to what others think.

I had Etiquette up to my eyeballs when I was young. Don't do it any more. I do not miss and spill things, but eat it the way I want to.

I don't care whether it's socially acceptable or not. I do as I please. If people can make rules everyone so abide by, I can make my own.

No, it is not socially acceptable at all. But then again social etiquette and graces seem to have fallen by the kerbside for so many things lately.

Hehe. As long as you're having fun and not hurting anyone, GO FOR IT !! Unkind words can be far more harmful to others than someone dipping a sarmie.

If "dipping your biscuit" is a euphemism for something else, then no it's not acceptable in public.

mmm....it appears the only person who went to finishing school is our very own Penny......have you ever tried eating a hard dry rusk without dipping it into your coffee in public? which do you think is more socially acceptable?

Someone here on AI told me that maybe I need to considder reading Emsie Schoeman's book on etiquette, so No its not acceptable. But I will do it any ways....

Reading anything would be advisable (good for improving your spelling.) Eating a biscuit that falls apart after you've dipped it is not as much socially unacceptable as it is unsightly.

I don't have issue if you dunk your rusk, some of them will break your teeth, but a sandwich? No, seriously, no!

Dipping the biscuit is ok these days..but it must be done delicately...half inch dips and nibbles are alright...plunging the whole biscuit is definitely not done. There are competitions and lessons on how to do it and which biscuit to use....letting bits of biscuit fall into the coffee is not desirable. Bread and cake should not be dipped at all. Rusks are breakfast foods and what you do in your kitchen is not for anyone else to see..in many countries rusks are something you put into hot milk and feed to toothless babies..adults do not eat them. My disgusting delight as a child..was to butter a thick slice of fresh white bread and dunk it in a glass of coke ...this had to be done when my mother was out of the house..or l would be severely reprimanded etc.

@ Sam... Getting so wrecked that you can publicly dip your cookie in your drink is not advisable. That is too close to a Bangkok bargirl's skill set for comfort!

Its not the norm, but it tastes so much better. I do it without hesitation or embarresment - I paid for the food, and I will eat it the way I feel is better.

Only a rusk and then like CD says to be nibbled. In the privacy of my own home there's nothing as lekker as a sandwich with bovril on it dipped in a mug of Rooibos tea! Takes me back to my childhood!

That's probably OK but not your cookie! LOL You would sure attract a HUGE audience but you could end up in jail and we'd sure miss you - and Samantha!

At home I will do it not when I'm out....

It should be, cause its delicious!

I do it all the time...

I am extremely shy so I personally would not dunk in public but on the otherhand I don't see anything wrong with it either. If you chew with your mouth closed and not spill over the keyboard I am ok with it.

I agree you can't eat a rusk otherwise. I also agree with Lucy about the falling apart thing. So I never do it in public. Etiquette rules have for sure changed.

It is socially acceptable, provided only that you use your own rusk, and your own mug of coffee. It is still frowned upon in England. Latvia and the other Baltic States. This has become a social problem in many of the South American countries, and the Federal Government of the USA is establishing a combined task force to fight this insidious scourge. In Canada, the French speaking States are combing to form a non-violent, but aggressive forum to fight for their dunking rights. In Australia it is okay to fair dunkum. The Battle of Dunkirk was fought for the same reason.

Depends on the amount of tee you have , sucking on a hard cookie is disgusting.
