Kiddies car seat legislation? What is the law?

In certain countries (e.g. Australia) baby's car seat MUST be in the back and MUST face backwards. What is the law in SA regarding your baby and her safe travel? 63 mths ago

I don't care what the law says: my children buckle up & if they have a friend in my car the friend must buckle up too and my law is THE LAW. We don't drive unless my law is obeyed and if 1 child unbuckles I pull over and stop the car (yes I've done this, scared the living hell out of my son's buddy, but my point was made, the little blighter has never done that again).

"South Africa Child Restraints If a child restraint or seatbelt is available in the vehicle it must be used. All Child restraints have to have The South African Bureau of Standards safety mark." http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/countries/south_africa.htm It is a bit worrying that they say "IF a seatbelt or child restraint is available, it must be used". To me, child restraints during travel should always be used. However, see the section on “The Law”. Maybe it will explain better.

I agree with Moi, the word "if" worries me. I thought it was law that all vehicles had to be fitted with belts for every passenger, although Mini Bus Taxi's don't have seat belts for the passengers do they? I don't care what the law says, when my grandchild is in the car she must buckle up. I believe in American you have to have a booster seat for children up to a certain age as well.

Nobody seems to bother in my neck of the woods,it looks like they get the child to stand in front of the passenger, with the head against the windscreen, some days I feel like stopping them and k@king them out,but we all know what will happen,I will get sworn at for not minding my own business,so guess what I ignore it.

I see so many people breaking this law.Children sitting on their parents laps in the front and back seats. They should be locked up but I think our traffic cops only know how to do speed traps.

Don't know the law on this one. What I do know is that if baby is in the front seat, they must face the rear of the car, and the pass. airbag (if your car has one) must bu turned off. Safest place for a baby in a car is in back, safely strapped into a GOOD QUALITY BABYSEAT WITH SABS APPROVAL. There are many baby seats on the market that are not worth much and offers little or no real protection.

To put it simply if there is one present in the car, the baby must be strapped in, if not, no fine/law.
