We file in 2011 for 2010 so in 2012 we will file for 2011. Since you only started working in 2011, you need to file your return in 2012 so you should register after this tax season ends

The Tax year runs from 1 March to 28/29 February, so therefore you will need to submit a 2011 Tax Return (IT14) for the period(s) you worked ending 28 February 2011 for all employers. The company you work(ed) for should have issued you with an IRP5 for the period ending 28 February 2011, and it is the information from these IRP5’s and any other salary related information (ie medical expense, RA’s, interest received) that you need to complete your IT14. All IRP5’s should include an employees tax number, and SARS have allowed an employer to register their employees (who don’t already have a tax number) for tax. Check first with your employer or on your IRP5 as you may already have been registered for tax. If not then you will have to register through SARS, and yes with 22 Nov deadline you will probably be too late to prevent any late submission penalties.

@GAD...he just stated that he started working from 1 Feb 2011....so how can he get an IRP5 for the period prior to that? He should register as a taxpayer, but will only be liable to sub for the year ending feb 2012.

If you started working for the first time during Feb 2011, your income for the year ending 28 Feb 2011 will be lower than the threshold for registering and filing a return, so relax about the 25 November deadline. You will get an IRP5 after Feb 2012 and if your employer is using e@syFile, you'll probably be registered for tax automatically. Just phone SARS after the end of May 2012 (the IRP5's have to be in around then) and find out if you got registered. If not, obtain an IT77 on www.sars.gov.za and register yourself. Your first filing will be during September 2012 if you file manually or during November 2012 if you use eFiling.
