Well here is the actual meaning: A Puritan of 16th and 17th century England was an associate of any number of religious groups advocating for more "purity" of worship and doctrine, as well as personal and group piety. Puritans felt that the English Reformation had not gone far enough, and that the Church of England was tolerant of practices which they associated with the Church of Rome. The word "Puritan" was originally an alternate term for "Cathar" and was a pejorative term used to characterize them as extremists similar to the Cathari of France. The Puritans sometimes cooperated with presbyterians, who put forth a number of proposals for "further reformation" in order to keep the Church of England more closely in line with the Reformed Churches on the Continent.

The Puritans were a group of people who grew discontent in the Church of England and worked towards religious, moral and societal reforms. The writings and ideas of John Calvin, a leader in the Reformation, gave rise to Protestantism and were pivotal to the Christian revolt. They contended that The Church of England had become a product of political struggles and man-made doctrines. The Puritans were one branch of dissenters who decided that the Church of England was beyond reform. Escaping persecution from church leadership and the King, they came to America. The Puritans believed that the Bible was God's true law, and that it provided a plan for living. The established church of the day described access to God as monastic and possible only within the confines of "church authority". Puritans stripped away the traditional trappings and formalities of Christianity which had been slowly building throughout the previous 1500 years. Theirs was an attempt to "purify" the church and their own lives. The large number of people who ascribed to the lifestyle of the Puritans did much to firmly establish a presence on American soil. Bound together, they established a community that maintained a healthy economy, established a school system, and focused an efficient eye on political concerns. The moral character of England and America were shaped in part by the words and actions of this strong group of Christian believers called the Puritans.

Let's not get carried away stereo-typing people through narrow tunnel-vision. I guess this needs some spelling out and slow talking for some of the people out there that are incredibly slow (IQ<69) and I'm sure you have a dictionary but refuse to use it or can't really pronounce the word to find it. So let me spell it out .... Pure-eish-tan. Maybe it means people of same color and race, and maybe it don't. Does it matter ... boet?

If you mean our own dear Puritan Boy, WW, then he appears to have named himself after a type of cigar.

Traditionally, Puritans were supposed to be loving, kind, tolerant of other people and their beliefs and never tried to impose their will or beliefs on others and never got irritable and immature when others disagreed with them. Good to have you back WW. Haven't seen you for awhile. A blessed new year to you and yours.
