What is a tooth abscess? How do you fix it?

Went to the DR for terrible migraines; was told it was a tooth abscess and go to a Dentist. 30 mths ago - -18 min left to answer.

An abscessed tooth is a painful infection at the root of a tooth or between the gum and a tooth. It depends on the state of the tooth, but typically you will be recommended to see an orthopedic surgeon to have the tooth removed. I would recommend going and getting this figured out soon; these infections are very dangerous. Good luck!

Yep, Kay got it right away.

You must take a course of antibiotics recommended by your dentist immediately. If you try to ignore an abscess it can cause cancer in your jaw. Once the inflamation has settled after 10 days the tooth can be attended to.

All 3 answers above are good, your Dentist will give you antibiotics and then attend to your tooth....

An orthopedic surgeon?? (Kay's answer). See a dentist as soon as possible.

Why did your doctor not prescribe anti-biotics to clear up the abscess instead of telling you to go to a Dentist, who will give you anti-biotics. They cannot work on your teeth/tooth if you have an abscess - it has to heal. This is double charging and no wonder these doctors and dentists are making a fortune out of us gullible people.

Woofie has said it. Your doctor should have given you antibiotics. Dentists do not give out prescriptions in UK..if they are any good they will send you to the doctors to get a prescription as it is dangerous to remove or work on a tooth that has an abscess, due to the horrible bugs in the abcess that can enter the blood stream and cause endocarditis and ultimately DEATH.

Dentist

It's like a bad infection within your tooth and gums. It sometimes, affects root channels, then, the dentist would give anti-biotics to remove the infection and ask you to come back to remove the root channel. And it's very, very, very painful

I have had tghem many times in my life. The pain is virtually unbearable. Please take those anti biotics....so that you do not loose your tooth. A dentist can also drain the puss (sorry) but that is what it is. The best Ear Mouth And Nose Specialist in our country gave me this advice, which I have passed on to so many. Take one heaped teaspoon of salt, one of Bicarb in half a cup of water as hot as you can take it. Stir well. Then sip by sip, swirl it in your mouth for as long as you can. Your mouth will feel like a raisin eventually. I swear, it kills all the germs. Do this for 3 - 4 days, at least 5 times a day. Absess gone. Good luck. I have been there....5 teeth at once.

Woofie's right. But, you may as well now go to the dentist.

Go to a dentist to have the tooth removed and to get a script for anti biotics. Don't get it become a problem (my fiance had one years ago, never got it sorted out and the one day he woke up and half his face was swollen from it).

Thank you Kay for making me laugh. Orthopaedic surgeons are considered to be the dumbest specialists by many (incorrectly so), but to see one for a dental abscess? What do you call an orthopaedic surgeon studying a chest X-ray film? Answer: a double blind study.

typially a abcessed tooth is formed when you have a dental cavity that eventually causes an infection of the nerve this creates a pcket of infection below or around the root of the tooth. the dentist may be able to save the tooth with a root canal filling this effectively removes the damaged nerve and although it kills the tooth should give you at least another 15 or so years before the tooth needs to be removed. however i agree with the answers above your doctor should have prescribed you with antibiotics immediately, this kind of infection is known to cause dangerous conditions such as scepticemia. also the dentist can do nothing until the infection is treated because it impossible to numb the area (anesthetic cannot penetrate the infection and get to the nerve). most dental surgeons will see you on an emergency basis even if you are not registered with them, i'd advise you to go asap.

I went to the Endodontist to fix my tooth infection two weeks ago. Not fun but took care of the problem. Just had the stitches taken out last week.

It's so easy, the dentist cleans it out and there you go.
