Modern knighthoods are typically awarded in recognition for services rendered to society, services which are no longer necessarily martial in nature. The British musician Elton John, for example, is a Knight Bachelor, thus entitled to be called Sir Elton. The female equivalent is a Dame.

I always thought that you had to do something out of the ordinary to be knighted, but Cliff Richard,Elton John,MicK Jagger never fought in any wars and did not do anything fantastic like saving a royals life or earn medals for bravery , no I truly think that knighthood in the UK is a farce , they put names in pieces of paper and throw it in the air , those pieces that land on the table gets knighted and those on the floor not

Causing death and destruction seems to help. Look for instance at Richard Armitage. For his outstanding service in leading America and Britain into an illegal war of aggression that has murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent people in Iraq, as well as his heroic role in running guns and money to the dope-dealing terrorist bands that sought to overthrow the legitimate government of Nicaragua, Richard Armitage has been secretly knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

Thanks for the info, dear Ghetto. I was surprised to hear that Bob Mugabe WAS a knight! Of course, that's been taken away now, but it just shows that HRH made a teensy mistake with at least one that we know of, eh? ;-)

Only the two highest ranks of the Order (GBE or KBE/DBE) entail admission into knighthood, an honour allowing the recipient to use the title 'Sir' (male) or 'Dame' (female) before their name.Honorary knighthoods, given to individuals who are not citizens of a Commonwealth realm, permit use of the post-nominal "KBE" or "DBE" but not the title "Sir" or "Dame". While substantive knighthoods are limited in number, honorary knighthoods are not.

One has to have been outstanding in their particular field. Have done something noteworthy, achieved the impossible or attained the unattainable. Then again - there was Sir Walter Raleigh. The epitome of etiquette.

Being knighted to me is almost the same as receiving the Medal Of Honor in USA just without the Royalty. It is being awarded the greatest recognition for service to society.
