Just guessing and some googling here....... The earliest known structure built by manlike creatures is a circle of stone blocks that was found in Africa. This “structure” may have been erected as long ago as 1,750,000 B.C.! The earliest known buildings, a series of huts containing fireplaces, were recently discovered in France. However, all that remains of these buildings are their outlines on the ground. That’s not surprising, as they may have been constructed as early as 120,000 B.C.

The oldest known structure is on Malta, a Neolithic Temple called Hagar Qim. But your question asks about the very first building. If Australopithecus Afarensis hominids built adobe or wattle and daub structures on the African Plains, would these not qualify as buildings? That would have been the first - we just have not found any archeological evidence of these hominids building yet...

Penny, Penny, Penny....never confuse people's religious beliefs with actual fact. The Kaaba, according to Islamic myth, was built by Adam, then Abraham, and has been rebuilt many times over the years. Quite understandably, certain AI-ers would find this Muslim view of history incompatible with their own Judeo-Christian mythology. Religious belief does not make the Kaaba in any factual sense the very first building ever built. If we could possibly step into the realm of reality, and quantifiable, evidence-based knowledge, then Samantha's answer is probably closer to the truth. Interestingly, Michael Tellinger, nutty author of Slave Species of God, believes that a structure in Mpumanlanga he calls 'Adam's Calendar' is the oldest on Earth, dating back 75 000 years. This 'fact' is of course, debatable. The earliest humans - a species like us anatomically - have been dated by DNA and molecular biology to about 200 000 years ago. These chaps must have built rudimentary shelters of some sort, but none remain.

People lived in caves.....made by the Creator, or whomever you believe in. Buildings are shelters, and caves were shelters.

Who is to say that the first building on earth didn't fall down a few times and need rebuilding or just turned into dust ??? Maybe you mean 'what is the oldest building on earth'??

I hope you know the answer, because I am very curious as to the CORRECT answer!!! Nice question!

Oldest "KNOWN" structure is as far as we can go...you won't be able to say what the FIRST one was.

No-one alive today can answer that question. Even that what we do know, is only the oldest building we know of and nothing more.

My office, because everything is falling apart.

And the correct answer is?

I am willing to bet anything that the first building that was ever built on earth does not exist any more.
