Resolved Question

Why is it that they say Grandpa powders are so dangerous?

Doesnt it just go into the bloodstream like any other pill but just works quicker? 68 mths ago

Best Answer

it has to do with the stomach and eating the lining and ulcers etc... but that must be over use rather than norm ... surely ... TANYA - custard powder does the same through a flame, should we stop eating custard too ??

It may be that it works TOO quickly, allowing the aspirin (which is an acid) to burn your stomach lining?

They are extremely addictive. My sister-in-law was....40 to 50 packets a day. She now has Alzheimers...who knows. Stay away from them. I have been warned by many people, doctor friends as well.

Reds, I don't know if they do have long term side effects, as this is the only headache pain killer that helps me. I can not take anything else as I have a very low pain tolerance. Alicia maybe right, but what else could I take with the same effect, if grandpa is so bad?

Because they are flamable. If you blow Grandpa powder through a flame they light up

I think it's because of the acidity. When you have a stomach ulcer or are prone to stomach ulcers, it's a very bad idea to have any medicine that it very acidic as it may burn an already sensitised stomach and could even cause bleeding. I took a half Grandpa powder once (tasted too horrible to swallow the rest) and was in agony for hours. It might have been coincidence, but I'll never touch the stuff again.

It is a acid, the thing ispeople use it to much, it burns the stomach and causes "maagsere". Overdose could kill you.

you must remember that Grandpa powders are extremely addictive because it puts you on a temporary high and feel good vibe due to the cafeien in it, the same way coffee does. My father was addicted to them together with Sinutabs and landed in hospital several times, barely making it. Thankfully he was able to escape the hold it had on him.

Take a grandpa and roll it like a sigarette, burn the end and blow, that is exactly what happens in your stomace. (DONT SWALLOW *BLOW*) My dad also had a "bloeiende maagsweer" from Grandpa's. And I really don't know how one can drink it, it is awful. I use Paramed for headace.

I don't see it been different from Panado, Compral, Disprin etc.

It is addictive

Grandpa contains a combination of paracetamol, aspirin (both painkillers) and caffeine, which, loaded with extra caffeine from Coke gives the user a mildly euphoric feeling and a "lift". "Dependency on Grandpa is very dangerous," says Ane Carelson, social worker and marketing manager for Elim Clinic, a drug rehabilitation centre in Kempton Park. "An overdose of paracetamol causes a lot of damage to the liver and kidneys. You can develop ulcers. "Some people are taking 10, maybe 15 a day, which can be lethal."

To my knowledge dont take too much of it regardless of the severity of the pain,it is addictive .

I never ever use them either, in fact I try not to use disprins of any sort. It does eat away at the stomach lining

I seldom use headache medication, but when I do I prefer Grandpa. It just works very fast. And the new orange flavour is lekker but the new packaging is crappy and difficult to use.

Grandpa is poison no matter how desperate you are please do not drink it, it affects your kidneys it can become very addictive.

My cousin became severly addicted to the stuff - She was eating it like sherbet - she ended up with a bleeding stomach and had to have one side cut away, waiting for it to grow and then had the rest cut away - the grandpa form a crust on her stomach lining and burst open hence the bleeding! Bad stuff to abuse!

As far as I know grandpa contains aspirin. Aspirin thins the blood. If you drink too much your blood will be too thin and you'll bleed up. Though if you're a smoker you're blood is thick so a bit of aspirin might actually prevent clotting. Some people are hypersensitive to aspirin though and can't take it.

I wish there will be bigger campaigns to make people aware of how addictive it can be and the consequences. My brother died at the age of 40, after most of his organs collapsed. He was addicted to grandpa powders for over 20 years (he took between 40-50 packets a day). When we became aware of it we tried to help, but similar to any addiction, he was hiding packets until it was to late. Thanks for the question.

Great question Red, will make people think twice. My grandma was addicted...so much so, than living in a small town arrangements were made with all shops and chemist not to sell her any...she would stop people and pay them to get her some. In the end all her organs gave in and she passed away. I'd rather die fom pain than taking a Grandpa!

The powder lies on your stomach wall and work like an acid. I can never understand why every body bans smoking but if you want to kill your self with pills, be our guest. As long as it doesnt stink.

The danger lays not in the powder itself but in the way it is used, if abused it will do everything as mentioned above, but grandpa is definitely the fastest pain reliever known to me, have used it for headaches, body pains even made a paste to put on sore teeth. I am not addicted to it.....but if it's addictive as the rest have said, is coffee not the same?

Just look at the name! How can you expect good results from a product called GRANDPA.

At one time I was suffering seriously with inflamation in my jaw (which then moves to my teeth and I used to end up in hospital at least 3 times a year for surgery to my mouth. One Sunday the pain started again and with no dentist available I went to the pharmacy, bought 1 packet of Grandpas (10's), a packet of Codis pills and a bottle of Stopyne Children syrup (I believe they call it a codis cocktail and is very potent for pain). All of this as I knew the strongest painpills the pharmacist could give me without prescription would not help. Anyway, I ended up in hospital again the next morning, having finished all the pills (on a huge high), but I had only taken 2 Grandpa powers. The surgeon nearly had a fit and told me that the only thing that would prevent him from operating was the fact the I took the Grandpas as it not only burns the stomac but thins the blood tremendously and that it could be dangerous for me to undergo the operation. I never took it after that.
