Only a passport. You are staying in Africa, you are not going oversees.

I have travelled quite a bit in Africa...I only needed a Visa. I think Namibie may be different. Now I am confused. Someone with more knowledge should answer this question.

You can't get a visa if you don't have a passport. And some countries don't accept temporary passports for travel anymore.

If leave South Africa you must have a passport and to enter a foreign country you must also have one. Some countries, however, require a further document (Visa) which is stamped in your passport. You should check with the diffenrent embassies/consulates of countries you wish to visit. (For example to visit 11 countries in Europe you need one Schengen visa)

I travel in Africa more often than I should. In addition to what Skeptic has said, all SADC -countries below the equator- do not require a visa if travelling on a SA passport. You may need one for those above the equator. In addition, if you intend working the rules may be different. Check with each countrys embassy, you can do this over the phone. Enjoy

You need a passport. Takes about 6 weeks to get from home affairs. From what I've heard you don't need a visa anymore. We're all part of the African Union. Yippy... please tell me when we voted for that! Might be wrong, I hope so anyway.

Im sure that you at least need the passport, and true that you cant get visum without passport.

If you travel between countries, you will need a passport. Visa is not required for SA passport holders if you travel within SADC countries. Other countries will require an entry / visitors visa. Don't waste your money, visit SA , local is lekker...

Fizz you need a passport and one that's valid for six months after the end of your planned trip. Home Affairs can get you one in six weeks, some ex-Home Affairs staffers run businesses to fast track applications. I have been to 25 African countries and made about 300 trips to them. For the most part, SADC countires don't need visas although some of these have only changed in the past year. DRC, Mozambique I think have recently changed. North of SADC countries you need visas but some of the smaller countries don't have embassies here which makes it awkward. Phone your travel agent as they have a guide-book on the whole process of geting any visa. Even with a visa it can be dodgy, I was held up at Maputo airport because the embassy had written "month" and "visa type" in the wrong block on the form. They just wanted some folding stuff but never did. I hate corruption. One last thing, if you're working in any of these countries, even when you don't need a visa, you probably need a work permit.

You will always require a passport. If you do need a visa, most of them can be obtained at the border posts as you enter the country and a few at airports. You have to buy the visas in cash. The best alternative is to check with the embassies of the different countries, while planning your trip. Southern African countries do not require visas if you are a South African citizen, ex. Namibie, Zambie etc.

You will ALWAYS need a passport if you travel in and out of ANY country. To obtain one usually takes between 6-8 weeks. You can also get an emergency passport if you need to travel sooner than that. Visa requirements for all countries are different so you will have to contact the embassy of the country you want to travel to. Whether you need a visa for a particular country will also depend on the NATIONALITY of your passport. It might be best to get in touch with a travel agent who specialises in Africa as they will be best able to help you.

you need a passport to obtain a visa . Some visa are acquired quickly but getting a passport is another story. Furthermore , the passport has to be valid for 6 months from the date of entry into a country (at least) - so a temp passport is not an option for you.

You definitely need a passport, and you cannot travel on an emergency/temporary passport in some countries so make sure you apply early. Most SADC countries do not require visas from south africans, however other african countries may have different requirements. Most SADC countries issue a free 30-day visa on arrival in the airport. Some land-crossing border posts cannot issue visa so you may need to check depending how you are travelling.
